International Match at Llwynypia

Wales v. England

"Remarkable enthusiasm was evinced in this Bank Holiday attraction, which was played at Partridge Grounds, Llwynypia between representatives of England and Wales.  The result was in the balance up to the final tussle between Jenkin Davies (Skewen) and J. Stone (Kent) and J. Thomas (Merthyr) and H. Kirby (Essex).  Jenkin Davies for Wales, failed to stay and he was beaten by 21 to 10 after having led in the initial stages, 10 to 1.  Thomas of Merthyr, after being well in front at one time, was taxed to the utmost in defeating Kirby, and only managed to snatch a victory when the score stood at 20 all.

This was the eighth international game between the countries, four having been won by England and three by Wales.  It is worthy of note that all the previous matches have been won by the home team.  Despite the fact that it is 10 years since the countries last met, there was certainly no decline in the interest taken in the game.  There was a large attendance, no fewer than 1,000 being present in the afternoon.

The last two games were played in darkness, and matches had to be struck to determine the score, the game concluding at 9 o'clock.

The officials were : -

Mr D. P. Jones, Mountain Ash - Ring Master

Mr Milton Thomas, Merthyr - Secretary

Mr D. J. Rees, Neath - Treasurer

Mr Edward Parfitt, Ebbw Vale - Chairman".
