QUOITS INTERNATIONAL
Wales Defeats England
There was great rally of quoiters at YSTRAD RHONDDA on August Bank Holiday when an international match took place on the SANDY BANK ground, between England and Wales. A large crowd witnessed the play throughout the day and were treated to a wonderful performance, the dexterity and ease with which some of the players pitched their quoits being wonderful, to say the least. It proved to be a very tight and exciting match, the Welshmen being ten points down after ten of the twelve games had been decided. The homesters' last two representatives, E.EVANS (Waunlywd) and J.T.POWELL (Dowlais Top), came to the rescue, however, defeating their opponents 12 and 9 respectively, and thus enabling Wales to run out victors, with a lead 11 points. One of the most interesting games was between W.DICE DAVIES (Captain), the Champion of Wales, and H.KIRBY (Captain) the Champion of England. "DICE" held his man well by covering the pin with the first quoit, thus maintaining the lead for the greater portion of the game and vanquishing his opponent by seven points.

It was in 1896 that the first match was played, Cheltenham was the venue and England triumphed by 308 to 209. Twelve matches have been played between the two counties (including one at Llwynypia and one at Ystrad), and the honours are level, each side having one six and lost six. Each country has also suffered one defeat on it's own soil.
